Feminism: Dangerous Heritage

In a previous post, I talked about the ways feminism has been destructive to our culture, but why did it take root?

In a future post I want to look at some of the legitimate concerns feminism sought to address, but there’s a deeper root to expose first. Feminism was the godchild of Marxist communism. If you weren’t aware of this before, you may find that shocking. I hope you do. We need to be shocked, because feminism is linked with a worldview antithetical to Christianity.

The Christian worldview sees societal evil as originating in each human heart. It is the sinfulness of humankind. Communism sees evil as the result of a power struggle between oppressed and oppressor, rigged in governmental and economic systems. For a Christian, the ultimate solution to evil lies within the human heart. In communism the solution lies without. Social and governmental reorganization is the key to eliminating human suffering.

This is a huge distinction with many ramifications, but for our present purpose, know this: essential to Communism is the deconstruction of the family. In communism, the state needs to be seen as savior and caretaker of the people. The family is the greatest barrier to this vision. Each family is a little economic and cultural microcosm exerting great influence over children and society. Karl Marx recognized this and wanted to deconstruct the family so that the state could create his vision of a perfect social order.

Women are the linchpin. They hold family together: women seeking families, coveting children, guarding them instinctively, wishing to nurture them, creating homes. This had to be deconstructed, and early feminists, from Betty Friedan to the National Organization of Women founders, were heavily influenced by Marxism if not outright Marxists.

Note this chanted catechism of the ‘new religion’ witnessed and reported by Mallory Millett. The year is 1969:

““And how do we make Cultural Revolution?” she demanded.
“By destroying the American family!” they answered.
“How do we destroy the family?” she came back.
“By destroying the American Patriarch,” they cried exuberantly.
“And how do we destroy the American Patriarch?” she replied.
“By taking away his power!”
“How do we do that?”
“By destroying monogamy!” they shouted.
“How can we destroy monogamy?” …

“By promoting promiscuity, eroticism, prostitution and homosexuality!” they resounded.”

I can’t recommend this entire article (noted below) strongly enough. Read it and weep. Read it and recognize the poison we’ve all swallowed.

So many things that destroy families were embedded in the early feminism we now largely accept. To my Christian friends, I would urge rethinking the following premise, “Feminism is basically a good idea, it just goes too far sometimes.” I would offer instead, “Feminism is a bad idea, that may have tried at times to address real societal concerns, but has failed and been incredibly destructive.” That this premise is controversial, even within the church, shows how far we have wandered away from the ancient paths. The seeds of easy divorce, abortion, promiscuity, and so much more, were all planted in feminism. They have produced societal chaos, and breakdown in the family with all the attending personal and psychological disorders that go with that.

It’s time to “Stand at the crossroads and look…” Can we see the ancient path that we missed decades ago and ask God for mercy to retrace our steps? Whether society as a whole can do that, I don’t know. But I know, as it has always been, that a few will stand their ground against the cultural flow, repenting where we’ve failed to follow in the past, ever looking for the path of Jesus. Please consider this with me, and let’s look together for His path.
